Excessive alcohol consumption can lead to many diseases. According to a report from Hopkins University, excessive consumption of alcohol increases blood pressure and increases the risk of heart failure and stroke. It can have cardiomyopathy disease. It is a heart muscle disease. Alcohol addiction is very bad and it is very difficult to get rid of it.
According to a report in the Indian Express, in a report published in the American Journal of Psychiatry, it is said that giving a single dose of naltexone drug after the alcohol has subsided will end the desire to drink alcohol. The test of this drug has also been successful. In the trial, some people were given the drug naltexone and some were given a placebo. After 12 weeks of the trial, subjects who experienced alcohol withdrawal had no or very little alcohol consumption after first taking the naltexone drug, but there was no effect on the placebo drug.
The effect of naltexone was so great that endorphins were stopped from being activated in the brain as soon as the medicine was taken. In general terms, when an alcoholic becomes addicted, endorphins, a chemical in the brain, are very active for intoxication, due to which the enthusiasm for intoxication is aroused. But as a result of the drug’s effect, the effect of endorphins was blocked, due to which the excitement of drinking alcohol ended.
Commenting on the study, Dr Rahul Pandit, Chairman of the Intensive Care Unit at Sir HN Reliance Foundation Hospital, Mumbai, said there is no doubt that naltexone is beneficial. But the thing to remember is that Naltrexone itself is addictive. Therefore, this drug cannot be used only to get rid of alcohol addiction, it requires complete treatment. Treatment is given only after examining the entire condition of the patient. All these should be under the supervision of a doctor.
Naltexone can help you stay sober for a while, but not forever. Therefore, this drug is not a complete cure for alcohol withdrawal.
